Riverside Cycling in Yawata, Kyoto

A cycling route from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station to Nagare Bridge (Kozuya Bridge) using a rental bike. Start your journey by visiting the National Treasure, Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. After exploring the shrine, treat yourself to local delicacies, such as the famous rice cakes and Shokado Bento, available nearby. Then, make your way to the riverside cycling path to enjoy the refreshing breeze. Be sure to also visit Joan-ji Temple, which is renowned for its beautiful camellia flowers.

1Visit Yawata's Hachiman-san

Take the cable car from Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station, and in just about 3 minutes, you'll arrive at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. From the scenic observation deck, you can enjoy a breathtaking view that stretches all the way to Mount Hiei. After visiting the vibrant vermilion main shrine, descend along the nature-filled approach and enjoy a peaceful walk down the mountain.

2A Delicately Smooth Taste!

Take a break at Yawata Hashirii Mochi, a long-established shop located in front of the first torii gate of Hachimangu Shrine. Relax and take a moment to unwind by enjoying their famous fresh mochi wrapped with sweet red bean paste, paired with tea from Yawata. Then walk 3 minutes and stop by the tourist information center in front of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station to rent a bike.

3The Essense of Japanese Beauty

Shokado Garden Art Museum is a Japanese garden associated with Shokado Shojo, the former head priest of Takimoto-bo at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. Enjoy a serene moment while admiring the seasonal landscapes. The tea house within the garden offers Sunday tea ceremonies from March to May and in October and November, allowing you to experience the culture of tea. The seating fee is 600 yen (including seasonal sweets), with an additional entrance fee required. Please note that the tea ceremonies may not be held if other events are scheduled.

4A Photo Spot by the Kizugawa River

Enjoy a riverside cycling adventure, and after returning your rental bike at Shikisai-kan, head to the wooden Nagare Bridge (Kozuya Bridge) that spans the Kizugawa River. This famous spot, often used for period drama filming, offers a scenic view of the nearby tea plantation, "Hama-cha," which embodies the essence of the tea region. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty and the scent of history and culture.

You can rent and return bikes at three locations: the Tourist Information Center at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station, Shokado Garden Art Museum, and the Yawata Nagarebashi Community Plaza Shikisai-kan. Hours: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM (Shikisai-kan opens at 10:00 AM). The rental fee is 500 yen per day, with an additional 500 yen deposit, refundable upon bike return.

5Joan-ji Temple

Cross the river and visit the historic temple, known as "Tsubaki-dera" (Camellia Temple), which is especially popular during the camellia season from mid-February to mid-April. If you're lucky enough to meet the temple’s head priest's mother, she might share fascinating stories about the temple and the surrounding area. (The photo shows the camellia exhibition.)
