Nakamura Tokichi Honten

Nakamura Tokichi Honten opened in 1854. With a history of more than 165 years, this tea shop is famous for its matcha sweets. While there are three Nakamura Tokichi stores in Kyoto Prefecture, the Nakamura Tokichi Uji Head Shop, which was the first store opened, is a must visit for those with a sweet tooth.

Only a minute from JR Uji Station, the store building is an important item of cultural heritage. In the gardens, there is a stunning 200-year-old pine tree, the Horaifuna-matsu, one of 100 famous trees in Uji City. Visitors can enjoy the view from the open terrace building, remodeled from what was once the tea factory, while sipping their tea.

The most popular delicacies in the store are, of course, the tea and the desserts! The tea jellies are a particular favorite, (which come in two flavors: matcha and hojicha roasted tea) and are made using Nakamura Tokichi’s secret recipe, sealing all the matcha flavor into the jelly, and paired with matcha ice cream, Japanese white flour dumplings, and red bean paste. It's a luxurious dessert served in a photogenic bamboo cup only used at the Uji main store. Visitors seeking a memorable tea experience in Uji can experience the rich flavors of Uji matcha here, making it an essential stop for tea lovers.

Kyoto Kitcho Shokado

The Shokado Bento packs seasonal flavors into a wooden box, divided into the four sections of the Japanese character for "rice field." Inspired by the actions of Shokado Shojo, a priest at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, who once used a farmer's seed container as his bowl, Kitcho's founder, Yuki Tei-ichi, also presented the food this way.
Take your time enjoying the local Kyoto cuisine here as you enjoy the camellia and bamboo in the garden connected to it.

Wazukasou

In Wazuka-cho, a town in Kyoto Prefecture and part of Uji's tea region, there is a small 4-room Japanese inn, Wazukasou. Wazukasou was formerly a small mountain cabin, but in July 2017 it was reopened as an inn. Apart from staying the night, you can also come and enjoy the delicious cuisine here (prior reservation is needed). The lunch time limited menu includes matcha tofu, roasted tea rice, deep-fried tea leaves, and more: a perfect combination of tea and Japanese style cuisine that can only be tasted here in the town of tea (the lunch course is 2,888 yen including tax). Come enjoy delicious food surrounded by tea fields.

In the inn's main building there are 2 Japanese-style rooms, and 2 Westernized Japanese rooms, and in the annex there is room for 30 individuals or groups of 8 people and more to stay. For dinner you can enjoy the seasonal kaiseki (formally arranged course meal), which incorporates tea through matcha tofu and roasted tea (houjicha) pudding. The baths are also infused with green tea, perfect for relaxation. With real tea in tea light candle burners giving off the scent of tea, and a complimentary sencha (green tea) after breakfast, the hospitality of this inn is irresistible for tea-lovers, and lives up to the inn’s own concept of "enjoying tea with the five senses."

MARU+JYU

Opened in September 2016, this guest house is a renovated 100-year-old former tea-processing house. While retaining the best of the original building, like its thick beams, the texture of soil has been used for the dirt floor and walls to bring out the atmosphere of a tea-processing house. Visitors can also experience traditional Japanese culture firsthand through the work of Kyoto lantern craftsmen, plasterers, lighting designers, etc. From the windows, you can see the rural scenery of Ujitawara and Mt. Jubu in the distance, and the stars spreading across the sky at night. It's an inn perfect for those who want to spend a quiet time enjoying the best of the seasons. There is also a cypress bath and kitchen, perfect for long stays.
