Our first stop is Kuwata-jinja Shrine. This shrine is nestled in the serene Yamamoto area of Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, and offers a unique blend of history, nature, and tranquility. It was formerly ranked as a “village shrine,” and is listed in the ancient “Engi-shiki Jinmyo-cho.” The mountainside behind the shrine, extending to the entrance of the Hozukyo Gorge, is blanketed in a lush forest of evergreen trees. Next up, are the ruins of Tamba Kameyama Castle. It was originally built in 1577 by the samurai Akechi Mitsuhide, infamous for assassinating Oda Nobunaga. The castle, perched on Mt. Arazuka overlooking the Hozu-gawa River, served as Mitsuhide’s base during his Tamba invasion. Although destroyed in 1868 following the Meiji Restoration, the castle’s stone walls have been restored by the Omoto organization, allowing visitors to explore its historical remnants.
