Enjoy a day filled with cute animals and breathtaking nature in Kyoto

The most interesting places can often be found off the beaten path. Just a short trip north of Kyoto City lies the breathtaking scenery, collection of cute animals, and mouthwatering cuisine unique to the Woodland Kyoto area. Rent a car near Kyoto Station, and set course for the countryside. An exciting day awaits.

1Baumkuchen café HA・RU

Nestled on the outskirts of Kameoka City lies Café HA・RU, a small café famous for making their own Baumkuchen cake. People come from all over Kansai to taste this delicious dessert, as well as meet the owner's cute dogs.

If you are lucky you might be able to see the dogs playing in the backyard, but be sure to be respectful and refrain from petting them.
Since the cafe can get pretty busy around lunch, we recommend arriving when they open at around 11am.

2Shizushi Limestone Cave Park

Kyotamba Town is home to Kyoto’s only limestone formation “Shizushi Limestone Cave”. Discovered in 1927, anyone can descend into this 52.5-meter cave for only 530 yen (310 yen for kids). You might even run into a few bats along the way! Since the cave naturally maintains a 12℃ ~ 15℃ temperature throughout the year, we recommend visiting in the summer.

However, this cave isn’t the only sight to see. Nearby, the Shizushi Limestone Cave Park boasts a variety of activities including: fishing, barbequing, camping, and occasionally festivals. Even just looking at the park’s forested landscape can put one’s heart at ease.

3Ayabe Fureai Stock Farm

This trip wouldn’t be complete without a petting zoo. From horses, to rabbits, and lots in between, Ayabe Furaei Stock Farm is home to a wide varienty of animals. Visitors can pet, feed, and even play with the animals! If you are feeling a bit hungry from your trip, the farm also has its own barbeque restaurant.

This lovely experience is sure to help relieve any pent-up stress. Remember to treat the animals just like you would treat your own pet.

4Roadside Station Nagomi

Roadside Station Nagomi is located on the left bank of the Yura River, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of nature, surrounded by the river and greenery. We offer a space where you can indulge in the four seasons and a variety of meals and products for sale. With our vegetable section, every day is like a morning market! Local farmers bring in fresh grown vegetables and wild vegetables raised in the natural surroundings of Wachi every day. We also have plenty of seasonal and specialty products. We open the Ayu Garden in summer. We sell Wachikuro (edamame) and Wachi chestnuts in autumn. In winter, we feature game products such as deer and wild boar.
