Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan is well-known for temples, shrines and traditions, but if you venture out a little, you’ll discover an entirely different Kyoto where beautiful, natural landscapes expand in every direction. We've divided the subtle charms of Kyoto Prefecture into four areas. From Kyoto by the Sea in the north to Kyoto Tea Country in the south, each area is unique and filled with different sights.
Kyoto by the Sea
Experience some of Japan's most famous ocean vistas and a traditional way of life by the sea
Here you'll find Amanohashidate, one of Japan's three most famous scenic spots, as well as other beautiful natural landscapes ringed by sea and mountains. Kyoto by the Sea is also home to many historical and cultural sites, such as the funaya (boat houses) of Ine and the red brick warehouses of Maizuru. The area is also known for its fresh seafood and fishing experiences.
Woodland Kyoto
Discover the unspoilt nature of Japan
Located in the central area of the prefecture, Woodland Kyoto features rows of traditional kayabuki (thatched roof) houses in a pastoral mountain setting, and bountiful nature untouched by man. The hills offer an abundance of matsutake mushrooms, chestnuts, sweetfish, and other local delicacies. Visitors can also enjoy boat rides on the Hozu River and many other activities.
Kyoto Tea Country
Savor verdant vistas rich in the culture and history of tea
Kyoto has a long history with tea, and famous Uji tea is produced in the region. In Kyoto Tea Country, you'll find beautiful tea fields and a chance to experience the locally established tea culture. Don't miss the many splendid historical spots either, such as Byodoin Temple and Ujigami-jinja Shrine, both World Heritage sites.
Kyoto Otokuni Bamboo Grove
Walk the peaceful forests of western Kyoto and savor their unique cuisine
The Kyoto Otokuni Bamboo Grove area has a long and storied history. It is home to the ruins of the former capital, Nagaoka-kyo, ancient kofun (burial mounds), former castle sites, and many other historical locations. It's also well known for its delicious bamboo shoots. Blessed with abundant nature, this area is perfect for a visit to a museum, a temple with colorful autumn leaves, or for enjoying strolls along beautiful bamboo paths, with the bamboo rustling in the wind and sunlight peeking through the leaves.
